Free Issues on Touch, Neurofascial Process, Integrative Manual Therapy and More

The Burnham Review Publishes Twice Monthly Integrative Medicine e-Newsletter
by Kimberly Burnham, PhD, LMT, IMTC

This month's issues focus on Headaches, Migraines and Manual Therapy Approaches and on Connective Tissue Disorders and Manual Therapy, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Headaches, Migraines and Manual Therapy
For hundreds of year people have rubbed areas of pain and tension. This issue of The Burnham Review looks at the evidence that manual therapy, reflex pressure points and touch have a positive effect on headaches, including tension headaches, cluster headaches, cervicogenic headaches, medication rebound headaches and migraines.

Stress, food allergies, neuroendocrine imbalances and nutritional deficiencies all may contribute to migraine attacks. Many nutritional and botanical therapies aim to reduce migraine incidence by decreasing platelet aggregation and preventing the release of vasoactive neurotransmitters, and by avoiding triggering foods.

A variety of physical approaches can be beneficial to migraine patients, including biofeedback, physical therapy, stress management, acupuncture, and spinal manipulation.

It is believed migraine sufferers do not encounter more stress than headache-free individuals; rather, over-responsiveness to stress appears to be the issue. Thus, lessening response to stress with the use of techniques such as biofeedback, meditation, yoga, and hypnosis may be effective.

One of the articles quoted is:
Havens, R. (2007). "Headaches and Craniosacral Therapy." 14-02: [Full Text] www.articlesbase.com/alternative-medicine-articles/headaches-and-craniosacral-therapy-104983.html.

Connective Tissue Disorders and Manual Therapy
Manual therapy and Massage therapy practitioners, Acupuncturist, Integrative Manual Therapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to increase circulation and fluid flow, decrease scar tissue and pain, improve joint mobility and strength, reduce depression and eliminate the signs and symptoms of connective tissue and extracellular matrix disorders in the field of fasciology.

They treat clients with a variety of connective tissue dysfunctions including: Benign Joint Hypermobility, Marfan's syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome / Cutis Hyperelastica, osteogenesis imperfecta, Scleroderma, Rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud's phenomenon, mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), Cardiovascular disorders, Down's syndrome, metabolic disorders (homocystinuria and hyperlysinemia), Fibromyalgia, Recurrent joint dislocations, Chronic low back pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome and Motor vehicle accident (MVA) injuries.

This issue of The Burnham Review also focuses on the work on Helene Langevin, MD at the University of Vermont Medical School. She describes both the cellular properties of connective tissue and the effects of mechanical stretching and acupuncture in relationship to connective tissue. Many of the articles published by Dr. Langevin are available in full text.

One of her articles reviewed is:

Langevin, H. M. (2006). "Connective tissue: a body-wide signaling network?" Palpating Diabetes
Another interesting article published this year focuses on ways in which manual therapists can palpate signs of Type II diabetes.
Licciardone, J. C., K. G. Fulda, et al. (2007). "A case-control study of osteopathic palpatory findings in type 2 diabetes mellitus." Osteopath Med Prim Care 1: 6 [Full Text] http://www.om-pc.com/content/1/1/6.

Best Wishes for the Holidays and Happy New Year from the Staff at The Burnham Review

Thank you for making this such a successful year.

Overview
The Burnham Review focuses on what the medical literature is saying about Integrative Manual Therapy, a hands-on approach with treatment techniques which address biomechanics (how the joints and musculoskeletal system move and functions), motilities and circadian rhythms reflective of the physiology or how the organs, the heart, lungs, glands, thyroid, adrenals, etc function and flow and reflex points including Synchronizers, Hypothalamus Regulation Mechanisms and Reference points which address the way the nervous system interacts and works with all other structures and tissues in the body.

Integrative Medicine approaches which include manual therapy techniques as well as nutritional and functional approaches are support by evidence based medical literature, The Burnham Review gathers those resources and information together for various conditions.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments (OMT) are being encouraged for
infectious disorders, influenza, even potential Bird Flu epidemics and other pandemics. By encouraging mobility in the area around the spleen, liver and thymus as well as improving lymphatic drainage, holistic health care practitioners can complement each others treatment as well as allopathic approaches.

There is evidence that
Yoga and Acupuncture as well as other manual therapy approaches can benefit people with seizures and epilepsy.

Consider the research into the benefits of Infra-Red Saunas (TheraSauna)

Back, Disc & Neck pain and joint dysfunctions, so common in the United States, are well addressed by Integrative Manual Therapy and Complementary Medicine approaches.

Practitioners are also seeing shifts and changes with Matrix Energetics Frequencies and Rife Frequencies (BioSolutions) and More.

Develop better relationships and communication with Non-Violent Communication (NVC).
